Care at a glance
The marbled crayfish is unique among crayfish: only females exist, and they reproduce without a male, every young being a genetic copy of the mother. The species only surfaced in the aquarium trade in the 1990s and has no known wild origin.
That very trait makes it dangerous outside the aquarium: a single escaped animal can found an entire population. It is therefore on the European Union's list of invasive alien species, which makes keeping, breeding and trading it prohibited; never release it and check the rules in your country if in doubt.
