Care at a glance
The black devil snail has a long, jet-black tapering shell and comes from the river mouths of South-East Asia, where fresh and salt water mix. Despite the name it is an extremely peaceful snail that leaves plants entirely alone.
It likes to burrow in sandy substrate and eats film algae, detritus and leftover food. It does not reproduce in fresh water, so a plague is out of the question; do make sure there is enough calcium in the water, or its striking shell turns dull and porous.
