Care at a glance

The Buenos Aires tetra comes from the cooler south of South America and is a solid, silvery fish with red fins and a black diamond mark before the tail. It is exceptionally tough and can be kept without a heater in many living rooms.

The downside: it strips soft aquatic plants bare and readily nibbles long fins. So keep it in a tank with hard-leaved plant species or artificial plants, in a decent group, and away from veiltails or slow-moving fish.

Good to know

  • Nips long fins
  • Eats or uproots live plants
