Care at a glance
The bleeding heart tetra from the upper Amazon owes its name to the bright red spot in the middle of its flank, exactly where you would expect the heart. Males can be told by their sickle-shaped, extended dorsal fin and longer anal fin.
It grows larger than most community tetras and therefore needs more room than its small relatives. Keep it in a school in a calm, planted tank; it is peaceful but easily startled, so avoid busy traffic right in front of the glass.
