The red eye tetra from southern South America is silvery with a black band at the tail base and a striking red upper rim to the eye. For a tetra it grows fairly large and solidly built.
It is easy and undemanding, but its pace and its tendency to nip fins can unsettle small or long-finned fish. Keep it in a school in a long tank, with tankmates of comparable size and temperament.
