Care at a glance
The silver dollar from the Amazon is a disc-shaped, mirror-bright fish that looks like a piranha but feeds almost entirely on plants. It is a true shoaling fish and becomes visibly skittish in too small a group.
Count on every soft aquatic plant in the tank ending up on the menu: choose hard-leaved species, wood and rock, or artificial plants. It grows big and startles easily, and can then collide with the glass, so give it a roomy, calm tank with a dark background.
