Care at a glance

The white cloud mountain minnow is the classic choice for an unheated tank. It comes from cool mountain streams near Canton and is happier at room temperature than in tropical warmth — kept permanently at 26 degrees it burns out and lives a shorter life.

It is nearly indestructible, tolerates soft and hard water alike, and is thus one of the few fish you can recommend to a beginner with an unheated tank. Keep it in a group, as a lone fish turns pale and shy. In a cool tank with some flow and open swimming space, the males spend all day showing each other their red fins.
