Care at a glance

The chili rasbora is one of the smallest aquarium fish you can keep: barely longer than a fingernail, yet a well-kept male glows fire red with a dark lateral line. It comes from dark, extremely soft peat swamps in south-western Borneo.

It shows best in a small, densely planted tank with oak leaves or alder cones; hard, bare water leaves it pale. Feed very fine dust foods or live micro-foods and add no larger fish, which will treat it as a snack rather than a neighbour.
