Care at a glance

The rosy barb comes from northern India and Bangladesh, where it lives in cool, flowing streams. Females stay silvery, while males in condition turn bright pink to coppery red with a black spot before the tail.

It is a lively fish that mainly needs length to swim; in cramped quarters or too small a group it will nibble fins. In many living rooms it can be kept without a heater, which makes it an excellent choice for a cooler tank with sturdy plants.
