Care at a glance

The Denison barb comes from fast-flowing rivers in the Western Ghats of south-west India and, with its red and black lengthwise stripes, is one of the most elegant barbs. Wild stocks declined badly through over-collection; the fish sold today are almost always captive bred.

It grows big and remains a fast swimmer all its life, so it needs a long tank with current and oxygen-rich water. Keep it in a group, as lone fish turn nervous, and mind the lid: it is a powerful swimmer that can clear the surface.
