Care at a glance
The marbled hatchetfish from the Amazon owes its name to its deep, hatchet-shaped chest, which houses the muscles that drive its pectoral fins. It hangs almost motionless just under the surface, hunting insects that fall onto the water.
A tight-fitting lid is not a luxury but a necessity, because a startled fish shoots straight out of the tank. Give it floating plants for cover, food that stays at the surface and calm tankmates that leave the top layer alone.
