The diamond tetra comes from Lake Valencia in Venezuela and owes its name to scales that catch side light like glittering diamonds. Males are deeper-bodied and develop a long, sickle-shaped dorsal fin.
Young fish still look drab in the shop; the sparkle only develops after months in a calm, mature tank. Give it a dark substrate, a school of its own kind and subdued light, and you will see how it earned its name.
