Care at a glance

The three spot gourami from South-East Asia is named for its eye being counted as a third spot alongside the two blotches on its flank. The blue, gold and opaline forms in the trade are all colour varieties of the same species.

As a labyrinth fish it takes air at the surface, so leave an air gap under the lid. It is large and robust: males can bully each other and smaller fish, so keep a single male in a roomy, densely planted tank with hiding places.
