Care at a glance
The blue acara originally comes from Venezuela and Trinidad; the bright blue variety sold in shops is a bred colour form of that wild fish. It is one of the calmest medium-sized cichlids and therefore a good introduction to the group.
It sifts sand through its gills in search of food, so give it a fine substrate and anchor plants firmly or grow them on wood. It forms a lasting pair and defends a corner when breeding, but stays remarkably peaceful the rest of the time.
