Care at a glance

The French angelfish from the Caribbean is, as an adult, deep black with yellow scale margins, giving a scaled, almost metallic effect. Juveniles are black with bright yellow bars and act as cleaners: they remove parasites from larger reef fish that come by specifically for the service.

It grows into a large fish that requires a show tank, and in the wild it eats mainly sponges, which makes it untrustworthy in a reef aquarium. Keep one, feed a varied diet including sponge-based frozen mixes, and provide plenty of swimming space.
