Care at a glance
The flowerhorn is not a natural species but a hybrid of Central American cichlids developed in South-East Asia, selected for a large nuchal hump and vivid colours. It has a pronounced personality and often recognises its keeper, which for many people makes it a genuine pet fish.
It is large and frankly aggressive: it is almost always kept alone, in a sturdy tank without loose decor it can shove around. Never release it into the wild and do not give it conspecifics or tankmates unless you have a great deal of space.
