Care at a glance
The blood parrot cichlid does not exist in nature: it is a bred hybrid between Central American cichlids, with a rounded body and a small mouth that never closes fully. That mouth shape means it takes food less efficiently than other cichlids and loses out at feeding time to faster tankmates.
Choose sinking food it can pick up easily and do not house it with fish that push it aside. In the shop, do not be tempted by artificially coloured or dyed specimens; the treatment weakens the fish and the colour fades anyway.
