Care at a glance

The redhump eartheater from Colombia and Venezuela stays smaller than most eartheaters; adult males develop a striking red fatty hump on the forehead. It sifts sand through its gills in search of food, exactly like its larger relatives.

In this species only the female broods: she takes the eggs into her mouth and raises the young alone, while the male courts several females. So keep one male with several females, and provide a fine sand floor with open space.
