Care at a glance
The African butterfly cichlid from Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia is a small olive fish spangled with glittering blue-green dots and a row of dark blotches along the flank. It is one of the few genuinely peaceful cichlids for a community tank.
It lays its eggs on a cleaned stone or leaf and both parents guard the fry together, without turning the tank upside down. Give it a soft substrate, some wood and planting, and calm tankmates of comparable size.
