Care at a glance
Fancy goldfish covers all the bred, short-bodied goldfish forms: from veiltail and oranda to telescope eye. They all descend from an East Asian carp relative and, given good care, live remarkably long, sometimes more than twenty years.
The rounded body folds up the gut, which is why buoyancy problems after feeding are common; offer pre-soaked or sinking food and avoid the most extremely bred forms. They are coldwater fish that produce a lot of waste, so they belong in a roomy, well-filtered aquarium, not in a bowl.
