Care at a glance

Rachow's notho from Mozambique is one of the most colourful freshwater fish there is: males are orange-red with turquoise and black markings. It lives in temporary rain pools that dry out each dry season, so the species grows up and breeds within a few months.

The eggs survive in damp substrate until the rains return, which means that breeding involves storing eggs dry. Expect a short life, feed small live or frozen foods and keep one male with several females; this really is an enthusiast's fish.

Good to know

  • Keep a single male
  • Hard to wean onto dry food
  • Known jumper — cover the tank
