Care at a glance

The pearl danio from South-East Asia has no stripes like its better-known cousin the zebra danio, but a pearly sheen that turns orange-pink towards the tail. In a shoal, with a bit of side light, that gives a surprisingly beautiful effect.

It is fast, hardy and copes well with cooler room temperatures, so it can live in an unheated tank. Keep it in a group in a long tank and keep it covered: as a lively surface swimmer it jumps straight out when startled.
