Care at a glance

The dojo or weather loach from East Asia is a long, eel-like bottom fish with short barbels around the mouth. It earned its weather name because a falling air pressure sets it swimming restlessly around the tank.

It is a coldwater fish that does not hold out long in a heated tropical tank; give it a cool, oxygen-rich setup with a thick layer of sand to burrow in, and keep it covered, as it slips out anywhere. Since 7 August 2025 it has been on the EU Union list of invasive alien species: buying, breeding and trading are no longer allowed, anyone who already had one may keep it until it dies, and releasing it outdoors is banned.

Good to know

  • Digger — needs fine sand
  • Known jumper — cover the tank
  • Outgrows most home tanks
