Care at a glance

Cryptocoryne wendtii is the dependable midfielder of the planted tank: a compact rosette of wavy leaves in green, brown or reddish brown that does excellently in low light and without CO2. It comes in enough colour forms to furnish a whole tank with it without things getting monotonous.

Almost everyone meets the notorious crypt melt: after planting, all the leaves dissolve. That is not a failure but an adjustment to the new conditions — leave the roots in place, remove the rotten leaves, and within a few weeks it comes back stronger than before. After that it is better not to move it, because the whole thing starts over.
