Care at a glance
Bucephalandra is the collector's plant among aquarium plants: hundreds of variants from the streams of Borneo, with small, sturdy leaves in dark green, blue-black or purple, often flecked with glittering dots. Some rare variants are traded by the leaf.
In care it resembles anubias: a creeping rhizome that you tie onto stone or wood and must never bury. It grows slowly and tolerates low light, which makes it a plant for the patient. Newly bought plants often melt first — that is the switch from emersed cultivation to underwater and not a loss. Leave the rhizome in place; new leaves will come.
