Care at a glance

The black skirt tetra from the Paraguay and Guaporé basins has a deep silvery body with two black bars and a broad, skirt-like anal fin. Young fish are jet black at the rear; over the years that fades to grey, which is entirely normal.

It is lively and will nibble long fins, so keep it in a larger group and away from veiltails and bettas. Do not be tempted by brightly coloured specimens in the shop: those are artificially dyed, a treatment that weakens the fish.
