Care at a glance

The gardneri killifish from the highlands of Nigeria and Cameroon is one of the most colourful freshwater fish you can keep: males are sky blue with red speckling and yellow-edged fins. Unlike many killifish it does not live in temporary pools but in streams, and with good care it lives for several years.

Keep one male with several females, as males chase each other relentlessly. It is an excellent jumper, so a tight-fitting cover is genuinely necessary; feed small live or frozen foods in a calm, planted tank with some floating cover.

Good to know

  • Known jumper — cover the tank
  • Keep a single male
