Care at a glance
The American flagfish comes from the shallow, plant-rich waters of Florida and owes its name to the male: red stripes on a blue-grey field recall the American flag. Coming from a subtropical region, it copes well with cooler temperatures.
It is one of the few fish that genuinely eats hair algae, which makes it popular in planted tanks. Do keep a few more females than males, provide plenty of planting for cover and avoid long-finned tankmates: it will nibble.
