Care at a glance

The zebra otocinclus from Peru's Ucayali drainage is the most striking of all otocinclus, with bold black-and-white banding. They are still wild-caught and often arrive weakened, so buy from a shop that has had them settled for a while.

It grazes biofilm and soft film algae and switches to dry food only reluctantly, so a mature tank with grown-in rocks and wood is a real requirement. Add blanched vegetables, keep it in a small group and provide clean, oxygen-rich water with some flow.

Good to know

  • Needs a mature, stable tank
  • Hard to wean onto dry food
