Care at a glance

The kuhli loach is the aquarium's little snake: an elongated, striped fish that prefers to spend the day buried or hidden under wood, emerging at dusk to comb the bottom for food.

Despite that hiding habit it is a social animal that only feels safe with a group of its own kind; you will actually see them more often that way. Fine sand is mandatory, as sharp gravel injures them when they dig. Feed sinking tablets after lights-out, so the quicker daytime eaters cannot snatch everything first.

Good to know

  • Active at night
  • Digger — needs fine sand
