Care at a glance
The vampire shrimp is a large, sturdy filter shrimp found in both West Africa and South America. Despite the ominous name it is entirely peaceful: like the bamboo shrimp, it sieves particles out of the current with fan-shaped appendages.
It is nocturnal and likes to hide by day, so do not expect to see it constantly. Provide strong flow and fine suspended food, because in a sterile, spotless tank it takes in too little; its colour also changes noticeably after each moult.
