Care at a glance
The orchid dottyback from the Red Sea is an even violet-purple with a thin black line through the eye. Unlike most dottybacks it is fairly tolerant, and because it breeds well in captivity nearly all fish offered today come from farms.
It likes to stay in crevices and under overhangs, defending a small territory there, especially against fish of similar shape and colour. Give it plenty of rock structure, keep one per tank and do not combine it with the behaviourally similar royal gramma.
