Care at a glance
The marimo moss ball is neither moss nor a plant but a green alga, which in a few cold lakes in Japan, Iceland and northern Europe grows into a sphere because the waves keep rolling it around. In the wild those balls are rare and protected; what you buy is usually hand-rolled from loose filaments.
It is extremely simple to keep: cool water, low light and the occasional squeeze in clean water. Turn it regularly so it stays round and green on all sides, and never release it into the wild, because unwanted organisms can hitch a ride on the ball.
