Care at a glance
Blyxa japonica grows as a compact, grassy rosette that looks like a small bundle of narrow leaves, and over time forms side shoots you can split off. Under strong light the leaf tips colour coppery brown to red, which contrasts beautifully with green around it.
It asks for a nutrient-rich substrate and appreciates CO2, although it also works without it given good light and fertilisation. Because it sits loosely in the substrate and does not root deeply, it can come free; plant it firmly enough until it has anchored itself.
