Care at a glance
The water hyacinth is a floating plant with glossy leaves on inflated, air-filled stalks that act as floats, and under plenty of light it produces a spectacular lilac flower spike. Below hangs a dense, dark mass of roots that serves as shelter and filter.
Important: in the European Union this species is on the list of invasive alien species, which makes sale, possession and distribution prohibited. In warm regions it is one of the most damaging aquatic plants in the world; never release it into the wild.
