Care at a glance

The green terror from the Pacific slope of Ecuador and Peru is covered in metallic green spangles, and adult males develop an orange-edged tail and a thick nuchal hump. The name is well earned: it is large, powerful and frankly territorial.

It shifts substrate, digs pits and rearranges the decor, so work with heavy wood and stones that cannot topple. Keep it alone or as a pair in a big tank; tall, flat-bodied fish like angelfish and discus are not suitable company.

Good to know

  • Territorial
  • Outgrows most home tanks
  • Digger — needs fine sand
  • Preys on shrimp and snails
