Care at a glance
The frontosa comes from the deeper zones of Lake Tanganyika, where it hunts small fish in groups above the rocks. Adult males develop an impressive fatty hump on the forehead; the black-and-white banded pattern differs between collection areas.
It grows slowly but gets large and old, so this is a long-term project in a spacious tank with hard, alkaline water. Keep it as a harem of one male and several females, and do not combine it with fish that fit in its mouth; those disappear overnight.
