Care at a glance

Fairy wrasses are slender, exuberantly coloured reef fish that hold in the upper water layer, picking plankton from the current. Displaying males raise their fins and make their colours literally flash, a performance lasting only a few seconds.

They do not bury themselves but sleep in a thin mucus cocoon among the rocks. They are notorious jumpers, so a closed lid is genuinely necessary with this group; keep one male with a few females and feed several small portions a day.
