Care at a glance

The ember tetra is barely two centimetres long and glows orange-red as if an ember were drifting through the tank. That size is exactly why it is one of the few schooling fish that suits a small, well-planted aquarium without making it feel crowded.

Small also means vulnerable here: it disappears into the mouth of any slightly larger fish, and in busy company it will not come forward. So house it with residents at least as small and calm. Food has to be fine enough to fit its tiny mouth. Against a dark background with plenty of fine-leaved plants it finally shows where its name comes from.
