Care at a glance

The black neon tetra from the Paraguay basin has no red at all, but a glowing greenish-white stripe above a broad black band. That contrast shows best over a dark substrate and against a backdrop of plants.

It is noticeably tougher than the ordinary neon tetra and tolerates harder water too, which makes it a rewarding schooling fish for a first community tank. Do keep it in a decent group and pair it with equally calm tankmates; large or boisterous fish make it shy.
