Duckweed consists of tiny oval fronds with a single root, which divide at a rapid pace and can cover an aquarium completely within weeks. It is the fastest-growing flowering plant there is.
That makes it an excellent nutrient sponge against algae, but also nearly impossible to remove again: one frond stuck to a net is enough to start over. Many fish, from goldfish to cichlids, eat it readily, which keeps it manageable.
