Care at a glance

Amazon frogbit is a floating plant with round, glossy leaves and an impressive veil of white roots hanging far down into the water. Those roots are half the reason to get it: shrimp and small fry find cover there, and micro-life grows on them continuously.

It also dims the light, which is calming for forest fish and counters algae on the bottom, and it pulls a lot of nutrients from the water. The pitfall is that it can close over the surface entirely; scoop some out regularly. Make sure the top of the leaves stays dry — condensation and spray from the filter make them rot away.
