Triangle cichlid (uaru)

Care at a glance

The triangle cichlid or uaru from the Amazon owes its name to the large dark triangular blotch on its flank. Young fish look completely different: they are black with white speckles and only change into the calm beige of the adult after months.

For its size it is remarkably peaceful, but it is sensitive: it asks for warm, soft and very clean water and reacts badly to nitrate build-up. Give it plant-based supplements such as vegetables and soft plant material, and keep it in a group in a spacious, mature tank.
