The red zebra from Lake Malawi is mostly sold in bright orange and yellow forms, while wild-caught fish can be a plainer blue or brown. It is one of the easiest mbuna: robust, colourful and undemanding.
It hybridises readily with other mbuna, so keep it separate if you want pure offspring. Give it hard, alkaline water, plenty of rockwork to mark out territories and mainly vegetable food; protein-rich diets it tolerates poorly.
