Care at a glance
The red rainbowfish comes from Lake Sentani in Papua and is one of the few aquarium fish that can colour up an entirely brick red. Only the males do so; females stay olive silver, which often causes confusion in the shop.
The colour only arrives after about a year, and the more competition there is between males, the more intense they become. So keep it in a larger group with several males in a long tank with open swimming space; it is peaceful but constantly on the move.
