Care at a glance

The mermaid's fan forms a thin, fan-shaped blade on a short stalk, usually greenish grey from the lime the alga stores in its tissue. It too anchors itself in the sand with a root-like structure and therefore does not belong on rock.

It grows slowly and needs stable calcium and alkalinity values, moderate light and gentle flow. Herbivorous fish and urchins may graze it down, so choose its neighbours carefully if you want to keep it.
