Care at a glance
The plate coral is one of the few stony corals that lies loose and free-living on the bottom rather than growing attached to rock. It does begin life attached on a small stalk, but later breaks free and continues on its own.
It can inflate its tissue and thereby move slowly across the sand, and can even right itself if it topples over. Give it a spot on the sand with gentle flow, moderate light and the occasional small piece of meaty or fish food.
