Care at a glance

The flame hawkfish from the Pacific is bright red with black eyes and black lines along the dorsal fin. It has almost no swim bladder and therefore swims little: it spends most of the day perched on a coral branch or rock outcrop, watching the tank from there.

From that vantage point it pounces on anything small enough, so ornamental shrimp and small crustaceans are not safe with it. Otherwise it is hardy and easy to feed; do cover the tank, because hawkfish can jump well.
