Care at a glance

The bluethroat triggerfish is one of the few triggers you can consider for a mixed tank: it lives on plankton and is considerably calmer than its relatives. Only males have the striking blue throat; females stay grey-brown with yellow fin margins.

It swims in open water all day and therefore needs a long tank with strong flow. Shrimp and small crustaceans remain a risk, but it usually leaves corals alone; feed several small portions a day.
