Care at a glance

The niger triggerfish is a deep blue-green to violet, with strikingly red teeth and long, sickle-shaped tail tips. Unlike most triggerfish it lives mainly on plankton, which makes it considerably more peaceful than its relatives.

It remains a triggerfish, though: shrimp and hermit crabs can disappear and it likes to shift loose decor. Keep it in a large tank with strong flow and swimming space, and with tankmates that are neither small nor slow.

Good to know

  • Outgrows most home tanks
  • Preys on shrimp and snails
